38. Presidential contenders boosted by super PACs -

WASHINGTON (AP) — Think of super PACs as shadow cash machines for presidential candidates. They're going to be big this year.

Real big.

The independent fundraising groups can gather and spend unlimited money to run ads supporting a candidate or attacking a rival. The leading Republican contenders, Texas Gov. Rick Perry and former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, both have at least one super PAC working to boost their candidacies. Another super PAC is backing President Barack Obama's re-election bid.

39. Fed to shift $400B in holdings to boost economy -

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Federal Reserve will use more than $400 billion to try to drive down long-term interest rates, make home and business loans cheaper and invigorate the economy.

Analysts said the moves would provide only a slight economic benefit.

40. Actions the Fed might consider at meeting this week -

WASHINGTON (AP) — When the Federal Reserve holds a policy meeting Tuesday and Wednesday, it's widely expected to adopt some new step to boost the economy. The question is what it will be.

Whatever the Fed does will likely be intended to drive down long-term interest rates to encourage borrowing and spending and lift stock prices. The idea is that all of that would combine to help raise economic growth and hiring.

41. Analysis: Is government's role to fix economy? -

WASHINGTON (AP) — The economy needs to be fixed. On this, Democrats and Republicans agree. They part ways over how to do it and, specifically, what role the federal government should play.

"Ultimately," President Barack Obama tells Congress, "our recovery will be driven not by Washington, but by our businesses and our workers. But we can help." His argument that government has a responsibility to do so probably doesn't sit well with an America that's down on Washington.
